Masada National Park

Masada located at the Edge of Negev Desert

The Masada National Park, the historical site perched upon a plateau that seems to reach to the sky, deserves an extensive investigation. Many people are familiar with the Masada National Park, and know it sits on the high plateau at the edge of the Negev desert. Most, however, do not have a full grasp of its importance in the history of Israel. Bedouin tent camping may also be waiting.

Getting to the Top

Masada National Park is one of the most popular places to tour. A ride on a camel may be an exciting part of this trip. The trails creeping up the sides to the top are easily accessed by these animals of the desert. Modernly, there is also a gondola ride that makes it an easy ride. The views are spectacular from the relative safety of these hanging cars.

Daily Living on the Plateau

There are many sites spread out behind the safety of the high walls that surround the Masada National Park compound. These walls helped to prevent access to the people living here. At least two cisterns for holding water are also seen. Bathhouses, pools and even a church made life almost normal for the residents. A quarry helped with the upkeep of buildings and provided stone for additional construction. Storehouses were kept as full as possible when enemy troops were not actively seeking to overcome the Israelites.

Incomparable View from the Top

Sitting on the western side of the Dead Sea, the Masada National Park area provides a view from any side that assails the senses. Horizons disappear in the haze of distance. Looking over the edge from the Masada National Park to the base of the plateau can be dizzying. Viewing the Dead Sea from this vista shows how very large it is.
